Herbal Cough Remedies
I do not do very well when I am ill with a cold or flu bug, as well as many others do not fair very well either, especially young children or the elderly. I have been looking for different herbal or natural remedies that might help when feeling under the weather with a cold bug. I am sure that there are many herbal remedies that would be good to use to treat minor ailments such as a sore throat or cough associated to a common cold.
I saw a post that my mom had found on Pinterest and I thought that it might be one to try, and will if needed. I know that when I was a kid my mom would always later me up with Vicks, give me some honey, peppermint and a lemon to suck on to help with a cough besides whatever medicine I was taking. I think one of the cough medicines I remember was Cremulsion, and for some reason I liked that better than all other cough syrups. I did not mind the taste I guess if I remember correctly it was licorice tasting. That really takes me back. I remember my Mamaw would give me something that tasted like nothing I had tasted before it had honey, lemon, some mint and it also had a burning flavor which now as an adult I know it was whiskey or bourbon.I guess that was to help me sleep.
With all of that being said I think that if you find something that works then stick with it. I know I have felt so bad sometimes that nothing has worked and I would have been willing to try just about anything to help me feel just one little smidgen better! I have been trying different things because I have really been trying to get back to using herbs and old remedies like they used to well before Western Medicine. I am not saying that I do not like Western Medicine by any means but I do not think that is a cure for everything. I know that they were able to do many things back then to help heal and treat many different illnesses within reason. If I am super ill and I need medical attention do not doubt that I would not go seek medical treatment. I am just trying to figure out more reasonable ways to treat things that do not require a doctors visit. It seems everything I go they want to prescribe an antibiotic. I prefer to try and do some natural and organic remedies first to see if natural elements can treat my issue.
Here are some cold remedies that i have found quite interesting.
Mine: 1 T of local honey, 1 T fresh lemon, 2 tsp chopped fresh mint, and my favorite tea. If I have a headache. I might add some fever-few leaves if I have them or a couple of Advil! I do not drink alcohol but you might want to add a distilled spirit if you are in need of sleep, your call on that.

Homemade cough syrups and herbal medicine teas make use of simple ingredients like honey and lemon infused with healing herbs. Every family has its own favorite cough remedy that is passed down to each generation. These classic folk remedies work as well, if not better than their commercial counterparts. Aromatic herbs like thyme, Caraway, and eucalyptus do double duty with powerful infection-fighting and cough suppressive qualities.
There are two main categories of herbs that are used in home cough remedies: expectorants and antitussives Use herbal expectorants when you want to clear the lungs of congestion and make coughing more productive. A dry, hacking cough is better served by herbs that calm the reflex to cough and act as mild sedatives. source: http://www.anniesremedy.com/chart_remedy_cough.php
MAGGIE’S COUGH REMEDY
¼ teaspoon Cayenne
¼ teaspoon Ginger
1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar (an organic one, like Bragg’s, is preferred.)
2 Tablespoon Water
1 Tablespoon Honey (use a locally produced raw honey, if possible.)
Dissolve cayenne and ginger in cider vinegar and water. Add honey and shake well. Take 1 Tablespoon as needed for cough. Hew-wee.
Note: This is potent albeit watery syrup. It also doesn’t dissolve perfectly. Always shake well before using. Source: http://nancyvienneau.com/blog/articles/home-remedy/
